Can't Get Enough-- Breakup Edition (July 7th)

Hey Lovies!

For those of you who are not familiar, this is the blog for the podcast "20- Somethings Doing Nothing." I like to come on here every so often to talk about things that I wouldn't normally discuss on the podcast.

The "Can't Get Enough" posts are all about music that I just can't get enough of. Typically they're new songs that you may not have heard of, sometimes they're very familiar songs... and NOW I'm doing one that's dedicated to breakup anthems.

I know, I know. Everyone is currently doing summer playlists... but considering I was recently dumped (for the second time this year-- safe to say I'm not too good with relationships) I figured I would put one together for all those ladies and fellas out there who are going through it right now. I even got some of my Twitter followers to chime in with their favorite breakup songs. Those will come at the end.

Hope this helps anyone else out there going through a breakup. Relationships are crap. (I'm not cynical or anything...)

Let's start off with some newer breakup songs, shall we?

1. "New Rules"- Dua Lipa

For all you ladies that are just SO-EFFIN-OVER-IT but can't seem to let go. You'll find this jam empowering. Follow homegirl's rules and you'll be in the clear. I know, you probably won't but it'll be a nice reminder to listen to as you drive home from his apartment after spending the night. (No judgement-- we've all been there.)

MY DEBUT ALBUM #DL1 IS OUT NOW!!! A massive thank you to everyone buying and streaming it 🌹🌹🌹 THANK YOU MY LOVES 🚀💖 https://wbr.ec/dualipa-album Follow me online: https://wbr.ec/website_dualipa https://wbr.ec/facebook_dualipa https://wbr.ec/twitter_dualipa https://wbr.ec/instagram_dualipa

2. "Find Yourself'- Great Good Fine Ok/Before You Exit

Kinda sad, BUT still upbeat. The chorus--"So don't let someone find you until you find yourself"-- is a clear message. Embrace yourself, love yourself and then when the timing is right you'll find the significant other you need.

Available now: http://smarturl.it/find-yourself Lyrics: I've been waiting Half my life Just to be the one to take you home tonight We can make it If we try But I want to wait until the time is right Tell me what's on your mind I can't get you off mine Are

3. "Waste of Time"- Snow Tha Product

Now, I don't care if you cheated on him or he cheated on you or even if no one cheated on anyone. There wasn't any cheating in my relationship, but I relate to every other aspect of this song. It's guaranteed to get you riled and singing along to that sh*t either way.

4. "Halfway"- Jake Miller

Jake Miller's new album has a bunch of great breakup songs on it, set to great beats that don't make you want to cry but still make you feel something. This is one of my favorites. Moral of the song: if you're not down, get the f*ck out. No time for half-assing.

5. "I Only Lie When I Love You"- Royal Blood

For all those people at the total "f*ck it" stage. I scream these lyrics at the top on my lungs and it's almost medicinal.

Pre-order "How Did We Get So Dark?"

Bonus: "Can't Help Myself"-Jake Miller

Remember how I said Jake Miller's album is full of breakup song gems. This is my second favorite and didn't feel right not adding it considering it's a f*cking BOP.

Okay, time for a few throwbacks and songs suggested on Twitter!

Five Shows to Binge-Watch ASAP!

As someone who doesn't watch that much television, I have found myself obsessing over certain shows lately. Full fledge bingeing out, laying in bed and ignoring all my responsibilities/friends. When I do talk to my friends it's about the shows I'm watching. Pretty crazy... I know. Just accept me for the obsessive binger I have become... or better yet, join me!

[Oh, and if you have any other show suggestions for me,
be sure to add them in the comments!]

Girlboss

Dude. This show is flat out perfect for an a-hole, like myself. It's sarcastic, quirky and fun to watch. At some points you love the main character and at some points you want to punch her in the teeth. The show is very loosely based off the book "#Girlboss" by Sophia Amoruso, the founder of the Nasty Gal empire. The 13-episode Nexflix original depicts a 23-year-old woman trying her best to make something out of herself without losing the essence of who she is, a fun-loving 20-something with zero fucks to give, (hmmm... sounds familiar). Now, this show has been cited as a "feminist" work by some. It is... and it isn't. Don't look too deep, just enjoy it for what it is.

The Get Down

I LOVE THIS SHOW! I have been watching it since the first season launched in August of 2016 and couldn't wait to start "Part Two," once it was released. "The Get Down" is set in the Bronx, during the 1970's rise of hip-hop and disco. A group of teenagers take you through their journey of trying to make it big within the music industry, while struggling with personal issues (unsupportive parents, failed friendships, romance, death) and their neighborhood crisis (drugs, gangs, violence, poverty). The music is amazing, the acting is on point and the story line is incredible. If you're into music (who isn't?) then you need to get on this.

Big Little Lies

I'm going to be completely honest here, I did not plan on watching this show. I was told it was similar to "Pretty Little Liars" and though I loved that show at one point, I absolutely hate it now. BUT when you're bored and lazy you find yourself watching some pretty random things. It focuses on a group of [mostly] well off women, who find themselves intertwined in the craziest of ways. It touches on some pretty serious topics, ones that you may not want to admit are real, but it does manage to keep a comedic value throughout. "Big Little Lies" is a murder mystery that will leave you wanting more once you see those credits roll.

Santa Clarita Diet

I happened to stumble upon this show as I scrolled through Netflix for something light to watch. It falls on the weird end of the spectrum, but it's perfect for when you want to watch something you don't have to think about. In the show, a very boring, married couple finds themselves in a huge predicament when their A-typical life gets tossed on it's head. I'm not going to tell you the reason for this sudden change because that would essentially ruin the first episode, but I will tell you that it's super random. This show is worth watching if you want some "what the f**k?" moments.

13 Reasons Why

Did you really think I would skip out on adding this to the list? C'mon, guys, you know me better than that. I'm sure you all know what "13 Reasons Why" is about, considering it's all anyone has talked about in the last month. But for those of you who live under a rock, it's about the suicide of a teenage girl, Hannah Baker. A few weeks after she took her life, a series of tapes surface. Each of these tapes is dedicated to a specific person that she blames for her death. Her story will tug at your heart strings and make you think back to every person you may have slighted or mistreated. It's a lesson/reminder that the impact we have on others is stronger than you think. This is a not a must watch, it's a need to watch.

  • Note: There are articles and people out there saying this show glorifies suicide. I think that's up to the person watching and their own opinions. I will say that it takes a mature person to watch this. Unlike, "Girlboss," I challenge you to look deeper than what's on the surface. Is it a revenge story? To an extent, yes. Does it have a happy ending? No. The ending is absolutely heart-wrenching, not only for Hannah but the rest of the characters. Is she satisfied with her decision to kill herself? If you pay attention, you'll notice certain cues that prove she wasn't. One last thing... the main focus of this show is Hannah, but there are supporting stories that are just as important. Ones that are just as emotional as Hannah's and that don't end in suicide.

Hello, World!

Snowdaze Turned Snow Days

Remember when you were younger and you did a little dance before bed in hopes that it would snow enough to miss school the next day? Then you went to high school and you told God that if he made it snow you would promise to actually write your 10-page paper and never procrastinate again. College came and you hoped it would just snow so that you could miss class without a tardy (because let's be honest... you were going to skip either way).

Now snow days happen and life... just... goes on. You still have to go to work and you still need to get your daily tasks done (laundry, paying bills, etc). On top of that you need to stress the f*ck out about how horrible traffic will be because of the snow, if your train is running on time because of the snow and if you'll freeze on your walk to the office door.

Storm Stella recently hit New York and New Jersey, where I work and live. Though I have had my fair share of snow storms throughout my 24 years on this planet, in the most temperamental climate known to mankind-- just for some context, it was actually sunny and warm AF a few days before we got slammed with snow-- I realized just how much I hate the snow. There's nothing good that comes out of snow anymore. I don't get the day off, I don't get to sleep in, I don't get to go snowboarding... I GET COLD AND MISERABLE INSTEAD.

Just one more thing to add to the list of things you miss when you get older. Let me know when someone creates a time machine, so I can go back to being eight-years-old and bum it on snow days.

Can't Get Enough (February 24th)

AYYYYYYYY!

So I have always wanted to add music to the podcast but I haven't figure out a way to make it work... yet. For now, I'll use the blog to post the songs that I just can't get enough of. Sometimes they'll be new songs and sometimes they'll be old. You might know them and you might not. One thing is for sure.. I have them on replay, they have their own playlist and they're the sh*t.

DISCLAIMER: These are not in order of most listened to. I listen to them all basically the same amount.

#1 "High"-- Jengi Beats feat. BRAVE

Mellow and exciting all at the same time. Perfect for solo car rides on your way home from work when you want to chill out a bit, but upbeat enough that you won't fall asleep while driving.

#2 "Back For Me"-- Electric Guest

This is off of Electric Guest's first album in five years and I'm flat out obsessed.

#3 "Pine & Ginger"-- Valleyz, Tessellated & Amindi K. Fro$t

I listen to this in the morning and it puts me in such a feel good dance mood. It's the sh*t.

(A little background: Pineapple and ginger is a popular drink in West Africa and the Caribbean, so is Sorrel.)

#4 "All About Me"-- Syd

I was recently put on to Syd and after checking out some songs, I like what I hear. This is one of my favorites. The mood of the song just gets me.

A Self Love Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is probably one of my least favorite holidays. Partially because I'm bitter and partially because I just think it's flat out dumb. All the stress that surrounds Valentine's Day, for both those in a relationship and those who are single, just isn't worth it. So instead of being a negative Nancy about the whole thing, I realized I don't have to celebrate someone else on Valentine's Day, I can just celebrate me.

In Episode 18 (Valentine's Day Woes) I challenged you to do something for yourself on Valentine's Day. It's amazing to see people giving to others and reaching out to those who need a "pick me up," but those same people often forget to do something for their own sanity. Let's face it, we're all about a centimeter away from a full blown 2007 Britney Spears breakdown. Life can get hectic and though it may be hard to take time away for you, it's necessary.

So I took my own challenge and now I'm about to share with you what I decided to do for my Self Love Valentine's Day. I decided to chill the f*ck out. I'm the kind of person who is constantly on the go. I got a lot of sh*t to do and not nearly enough time to do it all, which is a recipe for disaster if I don't remind myself to just chill every once in a while. I worked from home that day and vowed to re-f*cking-lax when I got off the clock. I watched "Titanic" twice (what can I say... I'm a sucker for young Leonardo DiCaprio-- don't judge me). Then I took a GLORIOUS nap. I don't think there are the proper words to describe how amazing that nap was. I ate some sushi and did a face peel. I have never tried a face peel before and it changed my whole life. Seriously... how have I not done that before? And to finish the night off, I filled an online shopping cart with new clothes... even though that probably wasn't the best idea for my already depressing bank account. #BrokeBitchProblems But f*ck it, it's Self Love Valentine's Day! I deserve a little somethin' somethin'. I even got to read some of my new book, "Get Your Sh*t Together" by Sarah Knight. It's taken me over a month to get halfway through because well... I don't have my sh*t together and I'm a busy motherf*cker.

Now, I know that may not sound like the "best" Valentine's Day, but it was 100 percent what I needed. I don't regret a second of it.

I hope you all got the chance to do something for you this year. You deserve it ya hot mess!
